Maigain Upchurch opens her show Transience, which explores ideas around impermanence. “High school, theoretically, should be a stable environment, a training and transition time into adulthood,” says Upchurch, “but my years as a young adult, specifically my high school years, were marked by constant change. I never attended the same school for more than two or three years. I returned to photograph one school that I attended, but I found it abandoned and in a state of dilapidation. I experienced an intense nostalgia and newfound appreciation for this fallen place. I photographed these remnants because they are symbolic of another instance in a series of unanticipated change, a reminder of transience.”
Upchurch is currently pursuing her BFA degree in photography.
