For her senior showcase, photographer Katie Napier examines the year between January 20, 2017 – January 20, 2018. The photographs explore not only the political turmoil but also the social movements during this tumultuous period – travel ban protests sit among the #MeToo movement moments, the “alternative facts” stand alongside NFL players taking a knee.
“The year 2017 ended much as it had started,” says Napier, “a nation uncertain of its future as a democracy. It was filled with some of the strangest moments in the United States’s history. Looking back is a chance to learn, but will we? How should this time in our history be remembered and to what end?” Napier is most passionate about photographing people, but with the last election, she has taken an interest in politics. She now focuses on different ways to express the current news cycle that has taken over the world.
