The world needs more substance.
Handmade & Bound, 8th edition, is a celebration of the art of handcrafted artists’ books, zines, and all things print, paper, and book-ish. The event will take place as part of the Southern Festival of Books on War Memorial Plaza from October 12-14.
Partnering with Humanities Tennessee, Watkins College of Art will provide various types of spaces for artists and vendors to display and sell their work. We welcome all applications from artists or vendors whose work is handmade and/or related to book arts, zines, and printmaking.
To apply to Handmade & Bound 2018, one must submit the application form, 3-5 images of work, and a $25 non-refundable application fee. The application fee will be applied toward the total cost of the space selected, if an artist’s application is accepted.
Handmade & Bound is a juried marketplace. Once the application deadline of May 1, 2018 has passed, artists will be notified of acceptance into the festival by May 15, 2018. Space requests will be finalized only upon receipt of total payment. All applicants will receive an initial confirmation e-mail upon receipt of a completed application, and another e-mail concerning acceptance status once the application is processed.
Artists and vendors have the choice of three different types of spaces. All spaces will be located underneath large Handmade and Bound tents.
- 10′ x 10′ space – $200
- Design your own 10′ x 10′ space to display your work. Either 6′ or 8′ tables and chairs are available to order. Electricity is optional.
- Single table – $85
- Choose either a 6′ or 8′ table as your footprint, with limited space behind for chairs, storage and/or signage. Electricity is optional.
- Slot in Zine Stand – $35
- Send us your handmade publication, and we will showcase your work in our Zine Stand. Festival goers can purchase artists’ work located in the Zine Stand through Watkins and artists will receive 80% of all sales of their work. Artists are responsible for delivery and pick up of work.
Tables are of standard 6′ x 30″ and 8′ x 30″ dimensions. Please specify which type of table and how many chairs you would like in the application form for both the 10′ x 10′ space or single table options. Table requests will be finalized upon receipt of total payment. Any signage, tablecloths, etc. will be the responsibility of the artist and vendor. Participants are encouraged to enhance the booth space to make their spaces visually intriguing.
Electricity is available for either the 10′ x 10′ space or single table for an additional $35.
A private network will be accessible to all vendors and artists, free of charge. Username and password information will be distributed upon check-in at the festival.
While there will be Watkins staff and volunteers to help, artists and vendors are responsible for load in/out, and parking. Load in will begin at 7 a.m. on October 12, and load out will begin at 6 p.m. on October 14. There will be lanes closed near the Plaza for artists and vendors to load/unload vehicles. More information regarding logistics will be emailed with application acceptance notifications.
The application fee must be submitted before an application will be considered. Artists can pay the application fee online within the application form.
Upon confirmation of acceptance into the festival, artists will be notified of their final payment amount, and will receive instructions regarding online payment procedures.
Sales and Tax Information
All vendors are responsible for taxing items for sale in compliance with Tennessee sales tax codes. Credit card machines will not be available for use, so vendors should plan accordingly to accept cash and checks or bring their own credit card processing technology.
Handmade & Bound Gallery Exhibition
In conjunction with Handmade & Bound 2018, there will be a corresponding exhibit in the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery located on Watkins’s campus.
