Fall Thesis Exhibitions Open Nov. 15 with Amy F. Edwards, Emily Davis and Mollie Row

Senior shows on view in Currey Gallery through Nov. 25

Watkins College of Art, Design & Film presents Fine Art Thesis Exhibitions 2012, a two-part series of work by five graduating students in the Fine Art Department. First up are two exhibition offerings by Bachelor of Fine Art degree candidates Amy F. Edwards, and Emily Davis and Mollie Row, opening Thursday, Nov. 15, with a reception from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Their work will be on display in the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery on campus through Nov. 25.

Edwards presents the mixed media show The Human Element, with work examining the mythology of human and animal influences relating to shapes and forms. Davis and Row collaborated on installations for the exhibition U N A S S I G N, which explores identity.

The exhibitions and reception are free and the public is invited. Watkins is located at 2298 Rosa L. Parks Boulevard in MetroCenter; free parking is available in the campus lot.  For more information, visit Watkins.edu or call 615.383.4848.

Show title: The Human Element
paintings, toys dipped in plaster, sculpey, tin foil, enamel

Statement: With this body of work, I am investigating the ideas of taxonomy and systems that categorize a hierarchy between humans and animals. The content of this investigation centers on the imagined and mythological creature as a manifestation of an altered or “outside” the system species.

Show title:  U N A S S I G N
Personal Works and Collaboration in Unfolding Identity

Statement: Through the process of mold making, life casting, and the replication of images, the artists weight multiple facets of identity. U N A S S I G N creates an environment that provokes the viewer to explore the qualities of physical and conceptual existence. Stripped of cultural signifiers, what remains? Are we vessels waiting to be filled or simply just a shell?
