Watkins Film School Presents Local Film Industry Mini-Conference & Showcase On Student-Produced Films

March 18, 2010 - 08:03 am
The Watkins Film School at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film is sponsoring a film industry forum and mixer from 6:00pm to 9:00pm in room 500 (the school’s large theater) on Friday April 16, 2010. The event is designed to raise the level of awareness among those in the local film industry about the student film program at Watkins and the work that is being produced by the young filmmakers enrolled in the program. It is also intended to serve as a forum wherein local semi-pro and professional stage & film actors, student filmmakers and local film industry professionals (including talent agents, casting directors, theatrical union representatives (Screen Actors Guild), and executives from local studios and production houses can discuss issues related to producing, auditioning for, casting and working in Watkins’ student-produced films.

Talcum Fables, an Off the Wall Group Show at Gallery F through March 6, 2010

January 04, 2010 - 14:01 pm

Gallery F at the Scarritt-Bennett Center

Talcum Fables, an Off the Wall Group Show, featuring installation, painting and photography. The show explores storytelling through unusual materials, and is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through March 6th.

Off the Wall Artists: Jenny Luckett, Mahlea Jones, Jaime Raybin, and Iwonka Waskowski.
Guest Artists: Nicole Baumann and Marcie Little.

ABOUT the show, Talcum Fables
Every piece of art in this show tells a story. Most are autobiographical, all are created by using unusual materials (including talcum powder), and all of the storytellers are women. While women’s issues are not the main focus of the show, there is a conscious feminine language established in the authenticity of each story. This language is communicated through the artists’ use of unexpected materials, and the viewers’ sensory interaction with those materials – the tactile, the fluid, the fuzzy, the powdery, the shiny. The works have been produced especially for this show, using varied media, including installation, painting, and photography. Curated by Off the Wall and Sabine Schlunk, managing gallery director.

ABOUT the artist group, Off the Wall
Off the Wall is a collective of artists who share a similar artistic language, a curiosity about materials, and are interested in creating work with personal resonance in a conceptual manner. The five group members met as students at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film. In 2005, they connected through their artwork and created an exhibition group. Talcum Fables is the group’s eleventh exhibition. To view other work, go to www.offthewallartgroup.com

Talcum Fables was recently reviewed in the Nashville Scene, by Russell Johnston. Read review here.

Visit www.scarrittbennett.org for more information about Gallery F and the show.

Opening Reception, Senior Thesis Exhibition, Candace J. Fasshauer & Claudia Overstreet, Thurs. Dec. 3, 6-9pm

November 30, 2009 - 13:11 pm

The Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Thesis exhibition for Candace J. Fasshauer and Claudia Overstreet will open Thursday, December 3, with a reception from 6-9pm in the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery on the Watkins campus.

Overstreet’s Fine Art senior thesis project, "’Inter-Ontologies,’ is a project of sawdust fired ceramic wall hangings. This project is about the unification of dualities and is inspired by the philosophies of Mahayana Buddhism. According to Overstreet, “with these works, I hope to help rid the Western notion that emptiness is equated to nihilism and remind us all that existence depends on other phenomena."

Fasshauer’s Fine Art senior thesis project, “Fabrication”, portrays a deep-seated struggle with fear, attachment, and security. The work explores the externalization of internal strife through opposition of playful materials and nightmarish imagery.

This exhibition will run through December 10.

Mandy Stoller Fine Arts Senior Thesis Exhibition Opening

November 16, 2009 - 08:11 am

I am interested in combining elements of Lo-Fi and Photoshopped perfection to produce a Sci-Fi Utopia. Through this body of work, I have created a sense of escape from the hectic world around us to a 3D dreamland.”

Stoller is providing 3D glasses to view her exhibition. Stoller is a familiar figure on the Nashville art scene. Most recently featured at Party For My Mom at Twist, she has also exhibited at Frist Center For The Visual Arts, The Open Lot and Studio 83.
