Watkins
College welcomes new President
Watkins College of
Art&Design is pleased to welcome Ellen Meyer as its new President.
Meyer was preceded in service by Dr. Jim Brooks, who retired in
June after over 7 years of service to Watkins College and 40 years
in higher education.
Before joining Watkins College, Meyer served as President of Atlanta
College of Art for fourteen years. While there, she led a $15
million facilities expansion, initiated a $4 million technology
campaign for art and design education, significantly improved
the curriculum and fostered many strategic alliances with national
and international organizations. Before that, she was Director
of Continuing Education and Special Programs at Rhode Island School
of Design, Vice President of Marketing and Extension at Minneapolis
College of Art and Design, consultant to the National Building
Museum in Washington, DC, and director of a ceramics program for
the National Park Service. Her previous experience also includes
practicing ceramist, art history instructor, gallery director,
and researcher and lecturer for the Smithsonian Institution.
A picnic celebration
to welcome Ellen Meyer and dedicate the college's second residence,
Turner Hall, will be held on Sept. 11 at 6:30pm.

College President Announces Retirement
Dr.
Jim Brooks, President of Watkins College since 2001, has announced
his retirement. Now in his eighth year as president of Watkins
College of Art & Design, Dr. Jim Brooks has notified the Watkins
Commissioners and Trustees of his intention to retire prior to the
beginning of the fall 2008 semester. Board chair Sam
Stumpf has indicated that a national search for a new president
is underway.
In announcing his decision,
Brooks expressed appreciation to Board members, faculty, staff,
and students. "The years I have spent at Watkins," Brooks
stated, "have been fulfilling and exciting...". Read

at Watkins College of Art&Design will host a one-day YART Fest
on Friday, April 4 from 10am-5pm. The event will feature one-of-a-kind
art items for sale as well as local musical talent and barbeque
food. Items for sale will include paintings, sculpture, pottery
and photography. Most works are one-of-a-kind and will be for sale
for $5-$100. All participating artists are affiliated

College of Art&Design Graphic Design students take home honors
at mutiple events

Watkins
College students had an outstanding showing at the recent Nashville
Advertising Federation Student ADDY Awards. Fifty-seven works
were selected for inclusion into the show - and 35 of these works
came from fifteen Watkins College students.
Senior
Rachel Dunagan, with six Student Gold ADDYs and five Student Silver
ADDYs won both the MVP Student Award and Best of Show. In
addition, Watkins College took home the MVP School award for the
most awards overall.

David Plunkert is a co-founder
of Spur Design. His illustrations have
appeared on ad campaigns for Adidas, Gatorade, Motorola, and MTV.
His work has been featured in publications including The New York

His work has been recognized by Communications Arts, the Society

College announces second campus residence
Watkins
College of Art&Design is pleased to announce a second campus
residence, made possible by a gift from the James Stephen Turner
Family Foundation. The second residence will be named Turner
Hall. The new facility will be identical to Hawkins Hall,
the college's first student residence named for donors Lee Ann and
Charlie Hawkins. This residence will be completed by August
2008 and is expected to be fully occupied by the start of the 2008-2009

Exhibition, judged by Joel Anderson of Anderson Design Group.
This
exhibition will run from October 5 - November 2 in the Brownlee
O. Currey Jr. Gallery at the college.
Artist
Lecture Series features Bill Daniel and Patrick Beaulieu
The Watkins College of
Art&Design's Artist Lecture Series welcomes artists Bill Daniel
and Patrick Beaulieu to Nashville to exhibit two outdoor multimedia
installations on Wednesday, October 10 at 6:30 pm. This exhibition
is free and open to the public.
Daniel's exhibit, Sunset
Scavenger, is a mobile outdoor video installation projected
on a 1965 Chevy sailvan schooner. Beaulieu's mobile multimedia
observatory, The Monarch Vector Project, follows the migration
clouds of monarch butterflies from Canada to Mexico. His
work is presented in coordination with Fugitive Projects, the Canada
Art Council and the Quebec Art Council. During this event,
fine arts students from the college will display their own video
work on the outside walls of the school.

actor to visit Watkins
Anthony Azizi, an actor
on series including 24 and Commander in Chief
will visit the Watkins College campus to speak with students and
faculty on Monday, October 1 from 1-2:30 pm. This event is
open to the public.
Azizi is in town to
act in a film by Andrew Newell, a professor in the Watkins Film
School.

Faculty Exhibition
Watkins College

Watkins
College Announces Two Academic Partnerships:
Beginning this fall, degree-seeking
students from Fisk University may enroll in an 18-credit hour Minor
in Film Studies or an 18-credit hour Minor in Interior Design, both
taught at Watkins College. Fisk students seeking their Bachelor
of Science in Art may earn their Concentration in Graphic Design
by completing a 48-credit hour program, 36 hours of which will be
taken at Watkins College.
Columbia State Community
College students who complete a specified group of courses leading
to an Associates Degree may transfer to Watkins College for an additional
66 credit hours to receive their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in
Film, Graphic Design or Fine Arts.
Film School
announces New Chair:
Watkins College of Art&Design
is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Steven Womack
as the Chair of the Film School. Professor Womack, an accomplished
author and screenwriter, joined the faculty of the Watkins Film
School in 1995. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in Writing rom
Southampton College in 2003 and his BA from Tulane University .
He is a member of the Writers Guild of America.

Design Announces New Chair, Assistant Professor
Watkins College of Art&Design
is pleased to announce the appointment of Associate Professor Michael
Niblett as Chair of the Department of Graphic Design. Niblett,
who has 25 years of experience as a practicing graphic designer,
has been on the Watkins College faculty since 2003. Niblett
earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma
and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Texas Christian University.
Dan Brawner, a prominent
Nashville illustrator, will join the faculty of the Department of
Graphic Design as an Assistant Professor. Brawner has taught
a number of highly regarded illustration classes as an adjunct,
and this appointment represents an expansion of his role.
Brawner received his aster of Arts degree from Syracuse University
and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from MTSU.

Watkins
College of Art&Design presents the work of graduating seniors
Matt Christy, Anna Gonzalez, Coffey May and John Whitten and as
part of a series of senior exhibitions. This exhibition will be
held at the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery at the College, located
at 2298 MetroCenter Blvd.
The exhibit will run through August 31. The exhibit is free
and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday Friday 8am-9pm,
Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 2-4pm. The College will be closed
on August 3.
Photography
students/alumni compete in juried Photo Competition
The work of current students
Ben Hancock, Amanda Nagy, Ellie Odom and alumni Kellen Beck &
Jill Mullins was accepted into the Paducah Photo Competition. Hancock,
Nagy and Odom represent the only student work entered into this
competition, which received 434 entries from six states for 70 spots.
Watkins had 9 pieces in
this competition. Kellen Beck took home a 4th place award
and Ben Hancock was awarded an honorable mention.

benefiting Nashville Rescue Mission
Extra/Ordinary Film Project
will premiere $6 Man, a film about a man and his daughter
forced to live on the street, on July 26 at 7pm. This feature-length
film will be shown in the theater at Watkins College of Art&Design,
located at 2298 Metro Center Blvd. Tickets are $5 (half price
for Watkins students). A portion of the proceeds will benefit
the Nashville Rescue Mission.
Extra/Ordinary Film Project
has a goal of producing 12 feature-length films in twelve months.

Watkins College of Art&Design
shines at the 2007 Nashville Film Festival. Film Chair Valorie
Stover serves as the Board President of this year's event.
Watkins Film School has 6 entries in the festival, all showing
on Tennessee Film Night 1 and 2. These entries were created
by students at Watkins Film School and include: The Romany
