Watkins Laptop Information for Students

No incoming freshmen are required to have personal laptops. Below are recommendations for the individual majors.

Film

Watkins recommends that all film students enrolled in FLM 112.01, Tech I, and all production classes taken subsequent to Tech I, have their own laptop computers. Watkins recommends a MacBook Pro (NOT a Macbook or Macbook Air) with at least 8 GB of RAM and more no more than 2 years old. Educational discounts are available through Apple.

Film students may need to purchase some of their software, such as Avid, Pro Tools or Adobe Creative Cloud.  Autodesk products and Microsoft Office can be downloaded by the students (at no cost to the students) from Autodesk and Microsoft.  Enrolled Watkins students will have access to unlimited Lynda.com training services at http://lynda.watkins.edu

Fine Arts

As of Fall 2017, there are no laptop requirements for Fine Arts majors. If a student wishes to purchase a laptop, Watkins recommends a 15″ MacBook Pro (NOT a Macbook or Macbook Air) with at least 8 GB of RAM and more no more than 2 years old.  We strongly recommend a padded laptop case and an extended warranty (AppleCare.) Educational discounts are available through Apple.  Please contact Information Technology and Equipment Services with any questions.

Fine Art students may need to purchase some of their software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud.  Autodesk products and Microsoft Office can be downloaded by the students (at no cost to the students) from Autodesk and Microsoft.  Enrolled Watkins students will have access to unlimited Lynda.com training services at http://lynda.watkins.edu

Graphic Design

Interior Design

As of Fall 2017, Interior Design majors are required to have a PC laptop their sophomore year. It must meet the minimum requirements, below.

  • Windows 10 Operating System (64 bit).
  • Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU Quad Core CPU
  • 8 GB RAM or more (more is always better)
  • 15” or larger display size
  • Discrete Nvidia or AMD graphics card is required.  Intel graphics are NOT recommended as they are not powerful enough for some of the 3D accelerated software.

Interior Design students may need to purchase some of their software, such as Sketchup Pro and Adobe Creative Cloud.  Autodesk products and Microsoft Office can be downloaded by the students (at no cost to the students) from Autodesk and Microsoft.  Enrolled Watkins students will have access to unlimited Lynda.com training services at http://lynda.watkins.edu

Photography
