Film School’s Fall 2017 Auditions Set for September 16th

September 1, 2017

Watkins College of Art, Design & Film will hold a general casting call for Fall 2017 student film projects on Saturday, Sept. 16th, at the Watkins campus in Metro Center.  Directors of productions from the BFA film program at Watkins will be looking for actors of all ages. Student films can be made under the SAG/AFTRA student film agreement and therefore all current union members are allowed to participate. Actors are asked to bring résumés and head shots for each audition (or a photo can be taken at the reading).

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script (with on-camera readings at the discretion of each director). Casting breakdowns and proposed shoot dates (usually over a 3-day/Friday–Sunday period) for individual productions will be posted by Sept. 6. Please go to www.watkins.edu and type in auditions.

Audition slots will be divided according to gender and age throughout the day (10a.m. to 4p.m.).

Individual appointments are not available.

10AM to 11AM – Leading men, age range 19-40
11AM to 12PM – Leading and character men, age range 41 and up
12PM to 1PM – Leading women, age range 19-40
1PM to 2PM – Leading and character women, age range 41 and up
3PM to 4PM – Young men and women, age range 8-18

NOTE:  No overall make-up audition session will be offered. However, after production breakdowns are posted, actors who cannot attend the casting day may contact specific directors concerning particular roles. If headshots and résumés are submitted electronically, please include name in file title.

All cast members will be invited to a screening of projects at the end of the semester and will have access to an online copy of the film and a quick-time file (without music) to cut into a reel.

Production Title: Quondam (Working Title)

Synopsis:  Winnie goes home to clean out her late mother’s/childhood home only to encounter something in the house. She is faced with the option of facing her past there or hiding from it yet again.

* This film contains strong language and violence.

Characters: 

Gwendolyn/Winnie: Lead: Mid to late 30s.  A curious and self-sufficient woman. Normally she is a quiet, calculated person but she harbors a great deal of undealt with emotions from the emotional and physical trauma she suffered in her childhood.

Warren: Lead: Mid to late 30s.  An easygoing, spastic person. Has no filter. Opportunist.

Gwendolyn (Younger): Supporting: Around the age of 10. Shy, scared. Has a hard time dealing with her home life and all of the emotions attached to that.

Robert: Supporting: Mid to late 30s. Stern, almost emotionless. Carries himself in a rigid, stiff posture. Every movement seems calculated and preemptive. When an emotion does slip through, it’s very heightened and intense.

Mrs. Connie: Supporting: Typical nosy next door neighbor. Outspoken. Puts on a fake ‘caring’ persona but doesn’t really care how she comes across. Rude and flat.

Synopsis: Junior’s dad runs away from him. It’s up to Junior to find his dad, before things get really bad.

Characters: 

Junior: Lead: A 25 year old loser. He has a girlfriend but they’re kinda on the fritz. He’s whiney, entitled, but persistent.

Hot Head: Lead: 28 year old tough guy. Probably does a lot of illegal things. He lives to torment Junior.

Sarah: Supporting: Junior’s girlfriend. 23 years old. She keeps Junior alive.

Dad: Supporting: A crappy dad in his 40’s. He abandoned Junior and is hiding on a different planet.

Mama Bear: Supporting: A wild woman who lives in the woods. She is probably 60 years old, but no one knows. She is the master of interuniversal traveling.

Synopsis: Virginian woman,  Lydia Jellis, has an unfortunate DUI that ends in a lengthy House Arrest. Her only support and boyfriend, Seth, leaves on a business trip to get funding for his hotel chain to build in South America. Left on her own, Lydia struggles with isolation and confronts a monstrous threat within her space.

Characters:

Lydia Jellis: Lead: A simple woman in her mid- to late-20’s, sentenced to house arrest after a DUI involving a controlled substance.  On medication she is an extroverted, mild-mannered person. Off of her medicine, her schizophrenic nightmares are further fueled by her newfound confinement.

Seth Hyde: Lead:  A sincere man in his early 30’s devoted to his relationships and his booming career as a part of the Board of Directors for the prominent Jekyll Resorts. He seeks to please with this new deal, and get promoted to CEO.

Beast: Lead: (No Dialogue) A mysterious dark creature of unknown origin with a stark appearance.  It’s steady gait and claws strike a disturbance in one’s soul.

Officer Jack: Supporting: An average man in his late 30’s who once was apart of the Homicide Squad, and now works as a county officer. He dotes on his canine partner.

Judge Marcel: Supporting: (Voice Only) A well aged man in his 50’s, he has worked the court system for 30 years. He spoils his 15 year old daughter and is one more misdemeanor from sending his 17 year old son to boot camp.

Boss Man Dan: Supporting: (Voice only) A nerdy, peacemaking HR manager of the creative Development Department in his early 40’s. He likes to be quick and efficient with his work and enjoys a game of Dungeons and Dragons on the weekends.

Synopsis: JD just wants a break from his nagging mother Margo. He decides it’s time for an early funeral and calls a hit on her. Things go according to plan.

Characters:

JD (20-21)Son of Margo; young, naive, and frustrated with his verbally abusive mother. One typical day when Margo loses it on JD, he snaps. He calls out a hit on her only to regret it.

Margo/Woman (45-50)Mother of JD, whom she calls Justin. Her work is shady and hard. She takes out her frustrations on her son, only to get the oddest of work calls. She reconciles with her son for an opportunity.

Russian Man (maybe middle aged)Guardian of BIG FISCH Phone Services. None shall pass without the password. Connects calls to agents for hit service.

Man 1 (30-40)Likes:Getting hands dirty for a living. Dislikes: Bad Coffee. Had his brother kill both his mother and babushka at age 10. Ruthless killer and silent assassin for BIG FISCH SERVICES. Built like a bull and fills a sweater well.

Man 2 (30-40): Likes:Babushka’s Coffee. Dislikes: No dilly dally. Poster boy of BIG FISCH SERVICES. Killed both mother and babushka for brother. Probably cloned.

Synopsis:  A man named Brick is upset by the fact that his fiancée Janet is expecting a girl instead of a boy. Determined to succeed by any means necessary, he purchasing a baby boy from a baby dealer.

Characters:

Brick: Lead:  A simple man who is arrogant and self stubborn. He and his fiancée Janet are in a rough, complicated relationship due to his bad vibes. He is willing to do anything to get what he wants.

Janet: Lead: Brick’s laidback, smart mouthed fiancée who is pregnant with Brick’s child. She becomes fed up with Brick’s shenanigans and has seconds thoughts about getting back with her ex-girlfriend Zannie.

Don: Lead: A professional local dealer who owns the bar and sells babies outside of the business (some of which are his and others he’s stolen) as a living. He has a smooth gangster like personality.

Zannie: Supporting:  Janet’s ex-girlfriend who is chill and quiet with bad girl tendencies. She makes a very small nonspeaking brief appearance towards the end.

Bartender: Supporting: A man who works at the local bar, he is a bit uptight, takes things literally thinking Brick is some child predator.

Synopsis:  Jack, a new college student, who wants to find his first love in college. He does not know what is waiting for him.  True love or bitter memories?

Characters: 

Jack: Lead:  An ordinary freshman in college, who is shy and lacks confidence. He has never had a romantic relationship before, but he wants to find his first love in the college.

Cathy: Lead:  A beautiful young girl, who works in the school library. She is kind and enthusiastic, and always has a sweet smile. “The Perfect Girl” in Jack’s opinion.

Sam: Supporting: A tall and handsome young man. Same as Jack, he is a freshman, but he is always confident and good at talking to girls, moreover he has had many relationships with girls before.  He is the exactly opposite of Jack.

Synopsis: Professor Dover fails Johnny on his exam, Johnny is in fear that his parents

will cut him off. Johnny goes to Marcus and acquires his services. Johnny gets greedy

which gets him and Marcus caught. This film contains strong language.

Marcus: Lead: Early twenties college student who is happy to leave his parent’s house. Other students pay him to hack the school and change their grades for a certain price.

Johnny: Lead:  An early twenties college student that doesn’t want to upset his Mom and Dad. He requires Marcus’ expertise to help him change his grades before he is cut off from his parents.

Carol: Supporting: Carol likes to stick to the rules, she doesn’t want to disappoint his elders.

Professor Dover: Supporting: A very stern professor who fails Johnny. He catches Marcus and Johnny.

Synopsis:  A mime questioning what he is supposed to be doing in life takes some time to rediscover himself. When he meets a girl who despises mimes, he tries to impress her.

Characters:

Manny: LEAD: A skinny fun loving man in his 20’s. Miming is his passion but he gets discouraged when things don’t go his way. Searching for a new meaning in life, he uses his awkwardness to try to impress a girl.

Anna Beth: LEAD: Attractive girl is in her 20’s from the big city. She moved out of the city for simplicity. She is quirky and fun loving.

Jimmy: 30 year old restaurant owner and a friend to Manny. Everyone’s friend.

Teenage Boy: A confident teenager who tackles the main character.

Waitress: A perky lady in her 30s.

Synopsis:  A comedy about two brothers who have broken into a home to steal a specific item. They tell their lawyer what happened through flashbacks, but they disagree on what really happened and interrupt each other repeatedly. Contains violence and strong language.

Characters: 

Eli Graham: Lead:  The older brother (mid-to-late 20’s). Sarcastic, dry, and bossy. Of the two, he is more professional but not by much. He thinks himself to be the more mature and intelligent brother.

Derrick Graham: Lead:  The younger brother (mid-to-late 20’s). Impulsive and high-strung. He is tired of being belittled by his brother. Not the brightest bulb in the box.

Wyatt Clark: Supporting: (early-to-mid 20’s). A nervous and inexperienced defense attorney.

Synopsis:  A young writer is struggling with a moral dilemma as the subject of his current work is shaming him for romanticizing death.

(Some foul language and dark subject material.)

Characters: 

Blake: Lead: A short fiction writer in his 20’s or early 30’s. Socially awkward and self isolating, he rarely communicates with anyone other than his friend Diane. Cut off from many influences of the outside world, Blake is trapped in his own head, making up a new reality.

Diane: Lead: A pretty young woman in her 20’s or early 30’s, and the subject of Blake’s unfinished short story. She’s blunt and brutal with honesty, especially when it comes to Blake’s writings. Although supportive of him, she’s disgusted by the way Blake romanticizes death.

Theodor: Supporting: A mysterious young man in his 20’s or 30’s. (Only one line, but an important part)

Stranger: Supporting: A street bum around the age group of 40’s-70’s.

Synopsis: “Home” follows a driven young girl, Emily, after she runs away from home to go live with her grandmother. In her journey through the forests of Tennessee, she meets John, a homeless man who promises to help her find her way.

Emily: Lead: (7-13) A young, fearless girl who is wise beyond her years. She runs away from home yearning to live with her grandmother.

John: Lead: (50+) A homeless man who has an extremely gentle, giving soul. He finds Emily in the woods by herself and wants to help steer her in the right direction. He sees parts of himself in her.

Mrs. Miller: Supporting: (25-45) Emily’s concerned mother. A bit over protective.

Artemis: Supporting: (25-45) A loyal, persistent man who is sent out to retrieve Emily to bring her home.

Nanna: Supporting: (50+) Emily’s grandmother, genuine and hospitable.

Synopsis: Jeremiah Banks is a Heavyweight Boxing Champion who has everything he could ask for except a woman to share it with. After a night of self-loathing, he meets a Beautiful Stranger. A Woman who could either be his chance at happiness or his biggest distraction.

Characters:

Jeremiah Banks: Lead: An African American man in his 30s. Mature but youthful. He’s a Heavyweight Boxing Champion with an athletic and muscular frame to match. He’s a man who has it all but sulks in his loneliness. He’s desperate to give and receive love. [CASTING NOTE: Boxing Experience and Knowledge Preferred. Heavyweight and Cruiserweight applicants are welcomed.]

Clementine James (C.J.): Lead: An African American woman and Jeremiah’s love interest. She’s beautiful, humble, and carefree. She’s mysterious but has a personality that warms your heart.

Ricky Harper: Supporting: A man in his 30s, who is also Jeremiah’s trainer. He depends on Jeremiah to make a living and enjoys the perks of being his best friend. Ricky is much smaller than Jeremiah in size but his big personality makes up for it. ANY ETHNICITY.

Tony Ford: Supporting: He’s Jeremiah’s agent and corporate sponsor. He’s labeled by Jeremiah as corrupt and cruel but his sternness marks his true personality. He’s in his late-50’s to early 60’s. His goal is to make as much money and to gain as much power as possible, by any means available, regardless of who suffers (Jeremiah). ANY ETHNICITY.

Man: Supporting: 30s to early 40s. He’s a Casanova Wannabe. An admirer of Jeremiah but annoying. ANY ETHNICITY.

Bartender: Supporting: A man in his 30s who works as a mid-level bartender. ANY ETHNICITY.

Synopsis: A documentary filmmaker spends the weekend with a drug-fueled writer.

Characters:

Nick: Lead: A documentary filmmaker in his early to mid-60’s. He’s very cautious and steady, however very sheltered from the outside world. Although he’ll tolerate the use of drugs, he is very much against using them.

Floyd Wilder: Lead: An eccentric writer in his 60’s who spends his retirement doing copious amounts of drugs in his large plantation-style home. Drugs help him maintain creativity and help him live for the moment.

Waitress: Supporting: A sassy southern waitress in her 50’s.

Synopsis:

Ignorance is bliss. Maria lives her life one day at a time.  When things get out of hand with her mother and she is  evicted from her home.  Without anywhere else to go Maria, places her trust in the wrong friend.

Characters:

Maria: Lead:  16,  She has faced a lot in her short life.  On top of  constant verbal and physical abuse from her mother, she deals with the solitude of being a high school junior, who is completely invisible to her classmates, which has seeded bitterness and rebellion into her heart.

Azazel: Lead: {Voice Only} An ancient Demon, who likes his playthings. A very sadistic monster who loves to provide endless torture to his victims, and revels in the complete control of it all.

Vicky: Lead: 18,  She has it all, the clothes, friends and endless parties. She spends endless hours perfecting her image to the outside world to hide her true nature: an evil cult leader who worships the demon Azazel.

Zelma:  Supporting: 30,  A very harsh woman who could care less about her daughter and sees her as dead weight holding her back from her true dreams.  She will do anything to get rid of the extra weight, no matter the cost.

Synopsis:  Dallas and Cory, two orphaned children, sew together a quilt in an effort to safely climb over the barbed wire fence that surrounds their town. Dallas, undergoing an identity crisis, realizes her true self along the way.

Characters: 

Dallas Whitener: Lead (Male, 15-19):  A sentimental and youthful orphan girl bent on finding a new life outside of Carpetown. Her father died 2 years prior to the film’s beginning, leaving her and Cory to fend for themselves in a world consumed by capitalism. Dallas deals with uncertainty about her identity. When she sees her reflection, she is reminded that she is trapped inside a boy’s body. *Dallas debuts a sports bra at the end of the film and embraces her true self.*

Cory Whitener: Lead (Male, 15-19):  A practical and analytical young man who looks after Dallas, even more so after the death of their father. Cory understands Dallas’s issues with identity and is a place of comfort for Dallas against the world.

The Manager: (Male, 25-40): The malevolent warden (of sorts) of the carpet business. He’s bent on finding out who has been rummaging through the dumpsters. He is a classic storybook villain.

Remy Lombard: (Male, 25-40):  A washed up barber who works in Carpetown, and the last one at that. His brother, Julien, made it big and was able to find business in hair outside of Carpetown. Remy now lives in the shadow of his successful brother and runs a failing hair barbershop, frequented by the two lead children. Remy speaks for the population of Carpetown, who is close minded and only live to fulfill the needs of the factories.

Clem: (Male, 30-45): A retired factory worker, representative of the town’s population. He is sarcastic and has nothing left to lose.

Synopsis:

In the deep South of the 1850s, young Emma Winchester watches as the outlaw Ida Grey kills her mother over a disputed deed that Ida claims the Winchesters stole from her. Now it’s ten years later, the country is in the midst of the Civil War, and Ida is back to claim the deed from Emma and her brother Eli. When Ida kidnaps Eli, it’s up to Emma and her friend Finley to journey to Legend’s Ridge in order to save Eli and end things with Ida once and for all.

Characters: 

Emma Winchester: Lead:  A headstrong, determined young woman in her early 20s who is traumatized by the murder of her mother and refuses to live a life that will lead her to the same fate. Although she is a younger sibling, her strong morals and relentless spirit have taught her how to take charge of a situation and protect the people she loves most.

Eli Winchester: Lead:  A sympathetic, calm, yet irrational young man in his early 20s. The trauma of watching his mother be murdered when he was a child has made him paranoid about losing everything he cares about. He will do all that he can to keep what’s left of his family alive, even if that means putting himself in danger. Although he is the elder of the Winchester siblings, he doesn’t take on the leadership role very often, as the trauma he struggles with hinders his ability to make rational decisions.

Margaret Winchester: Supporting: A sly, stubborn mother in her early 30s who does what she wants. Her instinct is first to act for the sake of her pride, then for the sake of her children.

Kitty O-Hara: Supporting:  30- to 40-year-old female outlaw

Justina Petro: Supporting:  30- to 40-year-old female outlaw

Synopsis: Ruby, a young girl in her 20’s is the last of her clan that was wiped out due to the dangerous abilities that run in the blood. Since her childhood she’s never stayed in one place too long. One day she decides to move to Arcadia, one of the few sanctuaries left for “normals”, and though she has powers, she’s taken a vow not to use them. She wishes not to see any more tragedy. Ruby hopes to find purpose and meaning this way. Until one fateful day she meets people that will change her life. STRONG TO MILD Violence and Mild Language (example: the “F” word is ALMOST used twice but is cut off both times)

Characters:

Ruby North: Lead: (Female, 18-25 year old) She’s reserved, verbal, vulnerable, witty, youthful, and realistic. Ruby is a “Fringe” but has dangerous abilities from the clan she was born into. Her clan wiped out due to the bloodline being dangerous. She took a vow not to use her powers again due to an incident where she couldn’t control herself. All her life she has been searching for the meaning of life. After a failed suicide attempt, she is puzzled why she clung onto life. Sneaking into Arcadia, one of the few sanctuaries left that kick “Fringe” out, she believes she can find a purpose in a normal life. Ezekiel Gray: Lead: (Male, 20-30’s year old) He is logical, decisive, resourceful, idealistic and bossy. He’s a skilled spell-caster and carries around his research/spell book. Nyx is like a best friend to him but Kit pisses him off, especially when she’s right. *VIOLENCE AROUND THIS CHARACTER*

Nyx Pierce: Lead: (Male, 40-60’s year old) Nyx is Honest, laid-back, humorous, wise, and unique. He’s an older man with a sweet tooth and often sends Ezekiel to the store for more candy. Nyx is the owner and boss of “Nyx’s Office”. To most, the office is just an import and export business but it’s also a business to help others with “Fringe” like problems. His abilities are unknown but he refers to them as “letting the beast out of the cage”. He lost his young daughter many years ago never finding who did it. He still looks back at the case files for any clues. He also loves classical music. *VIOLENCE AROUND CHARACTER*

Kit Sayer: Supporting: (Female, 20-25 years old) She is witty, charismatic, adaptive, assertive, and very flirtatious around anyone regardless of gender. She likes to pick on Ruby the most because she gets flustered easily. But she also loves pissing Ezekiel off, she views him like a brother. Kit’s powers aren’t clear cut. She has low level spell-caster powers but also mind powers similar to Vemir. She works as a secretary in Nyx’s office for both the Import and Export business as well as their “Fringe” business. She often copes with humor or drinking. *VIOLENCE AROUND CHARACTER*

Vemir: Supporting: (Male, 25-40’s year-old) The main “bad guy” for this short. His powers revolve around trickery of the mind. He wears an enchanted gas mask to stop others that have similar powers from invading his mind. *VIOLENCE AROUND THIS CHARACTER*

The Stranger: Minor: (Male, 20-30’s year old) A criminal that just broke out of prison. He doesn’t know why but he developed abilities even though it’s not in his bloodline. *VIOLENCE AROUND THIS CHARACTER*

Client #1: Minor: (Any Gender, 30-60’s year old) Kind, and positive. One of Nyx’s regular customers. They often come by every few weeks or months because their evil dead spouse is haunting them by putting ghosts in their wedding photos.

The Manager: Minor: (Male, 30’s+ Year-old) Owner of the gas station. A “Fringe” enters the gas-station demanding money. He refuses and gets killed in front of Ruby.  *VIOLENCE AROUND THIS CHARACTER*

Radio Bum: Extra: (Male, 30-50’s year old) Will be in the beginning montage.

Border Control Police #1-5: Extra: (Male, 20-40’s year old) Will be in the beginning montage.

Red Light Guy: Extra: (Male, 20+ year old) Will be in beginning montage. Border control stops you from crossing the city.

Green Light Guy: Extra: (Any Gender, 18+ year old) Will be in beginning montage. In front of Ruby and able to cross into the city.

Small Line Of People #1-6: Extra: (Any Gender, 18+ year old) Will be in beginning montage. Aiming for a diverse line of people of age, gender, etc.

Vemir’s Henchmen #1-5: Extra: (Any Gender, 20-30’s year old) Vemir’s Henchmen that get knocked out by Ezekiel Gray’s Power. Kit will use mind reading powers on one of them.

*Radio Talker/News #1-#4: Minor/Extra (Any Gender, 18+ year old): I Need 4 people that would work with me doing voice overs for a fake news broadcast/talk show. It will be part of the opening montage and possible inserts throughout. If you can do accents and different voices that’s a bonus! This will be very fun! (at least for me)

Synopsis: A caretaker of a local parish seeks revenge on his daughter’s killer. He must choose between forgiveness or his own form of justice.

Characters:

Richard: Lead: Mid 30s to 40s.The Caretaker himself, mild-mannered and quiet.  After the death of his daughter, he’s found comfort in the bottle and tracking down her killer. He has no boundaries on his path to revenge.

Father Nicholas: Lead: Early to Mid 60s. The priest of Richard’s parish. Tries to guide Richard in his time of need. Outspoken and comforting in this time of tragedy.

Synopsis: On their way to failing Chemistry class, a group of students who are Ivy League bound due to their mere attendance at a prestigious prep/boarding school are forced to go to Study Hall. This higher learning institution turns into a murder scene after an unreasonably rigorous teacher uncovers a sophisticated cheating ring.

Characters:

Tina Moore: Lead:  A quirky, driven African American Senior in High School. Tina, an aspiring author, who has dreams to be as big as JK Rowling, believes Ivy League Enrollment is the only route to making her dreams complete but first she must pass the class the Chemistry Class that’s standing in her way. Following the rich kids advice, she decides to join a cheating ring but this decision could cost her life. [CASTING NOTE: Emancipated or legal 18+ preferred due to the dark nature of the script]

Edward Duke: Lead:  A suave techie who is Mr. Popular around campus. His biggest muscle is his brain, which he has no problem using his tech lingo to impress the ladies. If that doesn’t work he’ll parade around “peacock-style” in his young Republican jacket. None of this impresses Tina, which intrigues him to pursue her even if it means becoming the brains of the cheating ring operation. Charles Crane: Lead:  A Senior Tennis Champ in High School basically has the school is his pocket due this his dad’s large donations. He only cares about winning and the Chemistry Teacher has gone too far in his rigor. [CASTING NOTE: Emancipated or legal 18+ preferred due to the dark nature of the script]

Helen Foster: Lead:  A teenage bounty hunter for the hottest party in a 10 mile radius. She just thought of a great idea on how to partying more and studying less.  She uses the rich powers for selfish reasons only. Her charm adds to her ability to manipulate man. Sarah: Lead: 20s something Instagrammer, local foodie, Nashville “native.” Her curiosity could lead to trouble.

Ben: Lead: Late 20s. Working professional. Sarah’s Fiance. Laconic.

NOTE: It is a long-term multi-media project. We will work around the actor’s willingness, but would prefer a higher level of participation. Ask for the details within, I literally love talking about it, this project is crazy.
