evening, February 26, the Nashville Advertising Federation held
its 2008 American Advertising Federation's Student ADDY Awards Ceremony.
Watkins College of Art&Design hosts its annual Graphic Design Student Exhibit reception on September 15Watkins College of Art&Design will host its annual Graphic Design Student Exhibit with a reception on Friday, September 15 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery at Watkins, 2298 MetroCenter Boulevard. An awards ceremony takes place at 7:00 pm. The exhibit runs from September 8 through 29, and the exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. This exhibit, juried by Alcott Routon's art director Ted McCoig, features a wide array of recent work created by students in the award-winning Graphic Design degree program at Watkins. Included in the exhibit are a variety of design projects including publication design, advertising, posters, packaging and multi-media. Accredited by NASAD (the
National Association of Schools of Art and Design), the Graphic
Design degree program at Watkins is based on the overriding importance
of conceptual design and exceptional typography skills, preparing
students for careers as designers and art directors. NASAD ensures
that essential areas of knowledge are targeted for emphasis, working
directly with AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), the industry's
national professional organization. Nine Graduates, Guilty of Killer Design, Celebrated their Success on Friday, December 1st.
The word on the street is that the December show was a major event, drawing in hundreds of friends, family and industry professionals looking to hire their next graphic designer. The crime theme of the invitation carried through into the show. The space at Studio Daylight was decked out in police crime scene tape and everyone received a parting gift of senior "mug" shots...on a coffee mug. Fabulous food and drinks paired with portfolios displaying a variety of talent kept people in attendance well past the 9:00 pm time frame. Congratulations to all
of the graduates who worked hard to create their "killer designs".
A big thank you to all of the wonderful sponsors who supported the
Senior Show. To see samples of the graduates' work, please visit www.watkins.edu/graphicdesign.

The Program
Watkins College of Art&Design recognizes that graphic
design is an art form that requires a variety of skills, from
conceptual problem solving to computer expertise. That's why the
B.F.A. in Graphic Design curriculum at Watkins College is the
most comprehensive in the region.

Starting with a fine arts foundation, graphic design students progress through a program that builds skills logically and effectively. Emphasis is placed on conceptual thinking and the art of creative visual problem solving, learning how to come up with inspired ideas to solve specific communication goals. Each student is challenged to employ the design process – including strategy writing – and a sense of personal style with each assignment. Once students gain an understanding of basic design principles and typography, they learn how to produce their ideas on the computer. Watkins' Department of Graphic Design has two state-of-the-art Macintosh computer labs where students learn industry-standard software, including QuarkXpress and a full range of Adobe applications for print, digital and Web design.
Watkins'
graphic design program is enhanced by field trips, workshops and
guest lecturers. Recent top-industry speakers hosted by Watkins
have included David Carson of David Carson Design and Robynne Raye
of Modern Dog Design Company.
Career Preparation
Watkins realizes the importance of students leaving
school with an outstanding portfolio. That's why a large emphasis
is placed on portfolio development, self-promotion and presentation
skills. Real-world assignments are incorporated into the program
to enhance students' portfolios and give them an edge in the job
market. Students are also prepared for their field through semester-long
internships at local or out-of-town agencies, design studios, record
labels, or other businesses. These internships offer hands-on work
experience and industry connections to Watkins' design students.
Important industry exposure is also received by encouraging students
to enter local and national advertising and design competitions.
Design competitions are a way to get recognition and to stand out
from the competition. Watkins has consistently placed highly in
both local and district competitions. Because competitions are important,
Watkins Graphic Design program has both a Nashville Advertising
Federation (NAF) student chapter, named the Watkins Design Mafia,
and an AIGA student chapter. At this year's NAF regional Student
Addy Awards, Watkins swept the competition winning 52 out of 113
total awards. Those winners will go on to the District competition
where entries will be pitted against those of schools from five
bordering states.
Advisory Board
Recognizing that the graphic design industry is one of
constant change, the Watkins graphic design department has an advisory
board of local and national award-winning professionals. These advisors
share their knowledge to ensure that the design curriculum stays
current, project assignments are challenging and appropriate, and
software knowledge is industry standard.
The Graphic Design Advisory Board
includes the following:
David Carson (New York City, South Carolina)
Jody Cates (Nashville)
Gail
Anderson (New York City)
Robynne Raye
(Seattle)
Art Johnsen (Nashville)
