Currey Show Gives Top Nod to Holden Head

February 19, 2014

Holden Head, a senior Photography major, claimed the top honor at the 2014 Currey Student Juried Show for his photograph “Astronomy.” As winner of the Anny Gowa Purchase Award, which comes with a $500 cash prize, Head’s work will be part of the permanent Watkins collection. A total of eight winners were announced by President Ellen Meyer during a February 6 reception in the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Gallery. Students received cash prizes as well as gift certificates courtesy of Plaza Artist Materials and Picture Framing.

Students in all disciplines submitted 150 pieces this year, with 35 selected by the juror, Paul Collins, a multidisciplinary artist and curator who is currently assistant professor of art and acting gallery director at Austin Peay State University.  Collins spoke at the reception of selecting works that had a “daringness to be bold.” The Currey Student show will remain on display through February 27.
