Summer 2008 Adult CLASSES

Ceramics

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

First Class: Jun. 12. (9 weeks)

$190, plus $65 materials fee. Instructor: Kelly Kessler

Students will learn the art of hand-building and wheel-throwing. Functional and sculptural pieces will be taught with an emphasis on form, decoration and texture. Pieces will be kiln-fired and glazed, painted, or stained. No previous experience necessary.

Digital Photography and Imaging

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

First Class: Jun. 12. (9 weeks)

This course covers tools used by professional and amateur photographers, such as camera controls, advanced retouching, color-correcting and other techniques. Students must have a digital SLR camera and previous photography and Photoshop experience.

 

Drawing I

Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Emphasizing the fundamentals of drawing and composition, students will use graphite, charcoal, and gray pastels to develop accuracy in their ability to render line, form, and dimensionality through a full use of value, sighting, and atmospheric perspective.

Drawing II

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

First Class: Jun. 12. (9 weeks)

Take the fundamentals of drawing and composition to a more sophisticated level. Students will work from still-life, plaster casts, and even accomplish a self-portrait. Mediums will include graphite, charcoal, conté crayon, and colored pencil.

 

Figure Study

Monday, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

First Class: Jun. 9. (9 weeks)

$190, plus $25 modeling fee. Instructor: Christopher Huffman

Working from a nude model using charcoal, ink, and graphite, students will learn to render a realistic human figure. Studying techniques such as gestures, mass, and volume, students will learn to create effective compositions.

Furniture-Making I

Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

First Class: Jun. 11. (9 weeks)

Learn basic woodworking techniques to create a piece of contemporary furniture. Instruction on the safety and use of power and hand tools will be included, as well as techniques for simple layout and drafting, joining wood, sanding and finishing.

Intro to Adobe Illustrator/In-design CS2

Students will work with objects, type effects, color, and other tools through the Adobe Illustrator program and then learn how to incorporate their artwork into a page layout using Adobe InDesign. Explore 2D and 3D computer aided design and drafting, using AutoCAD 2008. Brief intro to Google Sketch Up.  Students will gain the necessary tools to create and edit geometric shapes, plot files, and organize layers. Great for those interested in pursuing architecture or interior design careers!

Intro to Final Cut Pro

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Learn the newest editing program used by Hollywood film editors! Using Final Cut Pro students will learn to prepare projects for broadcast, DVD, and the Web, as well as basic editing techniques such as color correction, audio-mixing, soundtrack, and compressor.

Intro to Metal-Smithing

Mondays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

First Class: Jun. 16. (7 weeks)

$190, plus $30 metal fee. Students will also be responsible for purchasing their own tools and other materials. Instructor: Lauren Kalman

Explore the possibilities of this exciting and malleable new medium with its specific application to jewelry-making. Working with metals such as copper, silver and brass, students will learn basic metal-smithing techniques such as sawing, drilling, and riveting as well as the best tools for realizing their ideas in metal.

It's ‘Sew' Easy!

Whether a curious beginner or lover of handmade objects, this course will teach the basic sewing skills everyone should know. Learn while completing unique projects such as CD storage boxes, simple totes, stylish embellishments and more. Students are required to bring their own sewing machine.

 

Painting with Oil

Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Learn the basic technical skills of oil painting. A study of materials, treating and preparing the painting surface, and appropriate use and care of tools will be covered. Students will work from still life, landscapes, and their own imagination using oil paint.

Photography I

Printmaking I

Learn the basic skills of printmaking through an introduction of several relief and intaglio printmaking methods. Using tools such as copper plates, plexi-glass, brayers, and presses the class will cover processes such as monoprint, linoleum cut, collagraph, lithography, and drypoint.

 

Printmaking II

This course offers a continuation of techniques covered in Printmaking I.  Focusing on more advanced processes such as photo intaglio, three-color process polyester plate lithography, and silk-screening, students will gain a greater understanding of the vast world of printmaking. Prerequisite: Printmaking I

Screenwriting II

Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

First Class: Jun. 10. (9 weeks)

This course will take students through the process of turning a great idea into a script with hands-on guidance from the instructor.  Learn to develop an idea into a story that conforms to professional Hollywood standards, and discover elements that either strengthen or weaken a script.  Students will write actual script pages and begin the journey of getting their story out of their head and onto the page. 

Water Media

Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Explore the wide range of effects possible with water media such as acrylic and watercolor paint. Experimental ways to create texture will be demonstrated; and traditional techniques, such as glazing and wet-in-wet, will be covered. Basic principles of composition and color use will also be introduced.
