Watkins Film School Presents Local Film Industry Mini-Conference & Showcase On Student-Produced Films

The Watkins Film School at Watkins College of Art, Design & Film is sponsoring a film industry forum and mixer from 6:00pm to 9:00pm in room 500 (the school’s large theater) on Friday April 16, 2010. The event is designed to raise the level of awareness among those in the local film industry about the student film program at Watkins and the work that is being produced by the young filmmakers enrolled in the program. It is also intended to serve as a forum wherein local semi-pro and professional stage & film actors, student filmmakers and local film industry professionals (including talent agents, casting directors, theatrical union representatives (Screen Actors Guild), and executives from local studios and production houses can discuss issues related to producing, auditioning for, casting and working in Watkins’ student-produced films.

Wayne White is a three-time Emmy winner for his set and puppet designs for Pee-wee’s Playhouse. The L.A. based artist directed two seminal music videos; Peter Gabriel’s "Big Time" and Smashing Pumpkins "Tonight, Tonight," and has exhibited paintings and sculptures internationally.

Aftermath

Watkins College of Art, Design and Flim presents an exhibition curated by Patrick DeGuira. EXHIBITION RUNS March 5- 26, 2010 Opening Reception: March 5, from 6 pm-8 pm Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Gallery on Watkins Campus
Including works by- Harmony Korine, Leigh Ledare, Angela Messina, Laurie Nye, Chris Scarborogh, Rob Smith, Brent Stewart, Terry Rowlett and Kurt Wagner. Aftermath is an exhibition that reads like a poem, recognizing each individual work such as line, phrase, or moment. Through the use of photography, painting and sculpture, the included works comment on the notions of disorder, identity, rebirth and the landscape.

An Alumni career event will be held Saturday, November 7, 2-4:30pm at the College. Join fellow alumni for a general session to find out what Watkins does for you.
Afterwards, join one of three round-table breakout sessions, led by College and community experts, on the following topics:
- Graduate school: How to select a program, get in and most importantly, get out, whether you’re attending full time, part time, while working, etc.
- Business: Tips to start your own business or run a successful freelance practice, along with networking tips and how to sell yourself.
- Galleries: Interested in showing your work in galleries? Learn more from exhibitors, curators and directors of residency programs
Germany meets Watkins - Sister City Film Screening, Friday, October 9

On Friday, October 9 at 7pm, film students from Nashville’s sister city of Magdeburg, Germany will premiere their documentary “Gewendete Leben”, which both commemorates and reflects on life 20 years after the fall of the Berlin wall. The screening will be held in the theater and is free and open to the public. Presented in partnership with Sister Cities of Nashville.

Watkins films selected to screen at International Black Film Festival

Alumni Toi Johnson and Michael Cain recently had films selected to screen at the International Black Film Festival in Nashville. Toi Johnson’s "Happy Thanksgiving" and Michael Cain’s "Mother Daughter" will both screen on Saturday, Oct 3, at noon at Regal Opry Mills #20.

Abstract Painting Panel at Watkins, Sept. 24, 6-8pm

This artist panel follows the Tennessee Abstract Painters exhibition at Cheekwood, which closes September 20. The panelists will present ideas supporting and/or critiquing the discursive nature of abstract painting in our culture, in this day and time.
Panelists include:
- Gregg Horowitz, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Vanderbilt University. Horowitz’s work focuses on the philosophy of art and art history, political philosophy and psychoanalysis. He has special research interests in the relation of aesthetics and cultural theory to critical social theory.
- Hans Schmitt-Matzen, Artist and associate exhibitions designer at the Frist Center for The Visual Arts
- Jered Sprecher, University of Tennessee – Knoxville Art Professor and 2009 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow
- Terry Thacker, Artist and Chair of the Fine Arts Department, Watkins College of Art, Design & Film
Graphic Design pioneer Jane Davis Doggett to speak at Watkins on Sept. 18

Nashville Native and Graphic Design pioneer Jane Davis Doggett will teach a "Master Class" at Watkins on Friday, September 18, at 5pm in Room 205. Free. This event is in partnership with her exhibition at the Tennessee State Museum, which opens September 17 and runs through October 25.
